“Can you please take some photos of me before we go out for dinner?” I ask.

“Yes. But we can’t be long.” My husband replies.

The camera gets pulled out for all of 45 seconds. Snaps five photos. “Thank God at least two thirds of those photos look decent.” I retort.

The camera then suitably get’s stuffed away. Me, wishing that we had just fit a couple more in for the sake of another minute.

Excuse the long and drawn out blog title, but I think for some of us Bloggers we aren’t bestowed with an on-hand photographer Boyfriend for all our every day blogging needs and requirements, are we? So I’m trying to make it a little easier for us poor souls who have to deal with this. Welcome to the basic blogging bitches #BloggingProbs101.

I don’t know if it is just me that suffers with a similar scenario each time I require a little help with the blog from the other half? Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. Was it the hot weather making it a bit too unbearable? No. This happens each time. Goddammit, do they not realise the composition of our photos make all the difference? Okay, I realise I sound like a whiny bitch. But sometimes, ya just gotta have a little moan? Am I right? I notice a lot of other bloggers have very creative other halves, photographers, band members or musicians, designers, the list goes on. Well, my husband, he’s in the motor trade and a Farmer’s son. “Good with the hands they say!” Well, yes. Yes, you’d be right. But not when a camera is in hand getting the perfect shot. Pass me the burn book, call me a horrible person, but all I want is a little co-operation every once in a while. And whilst these photos are not too shabby (a little bit of post editing on my part) I thought I would put together a post of tips for Fashion Blog Photography with a Not-So Creative Other Half!

Meet up with other Bloggers
I know that I have a fair few blogging friends and some I could definitely count on my fingers to support me if I ever needed a little blog photo session. There’s often times when I’ve met up before events or afterwards to take the opportunity to shoot outfit posts. I probably feel less vunerable around my blogging friends too, because we all know how it goes. Strike a few poses looking sultry, checking the photos, ask for a couple more, doing it all over again and then swapping places so the other can then take photos of the other person. It’s a great, simple & cost effective way of getting some great shots because fellow bloggers know what makes a good shot, after all!

Buy a Tripod
Go the whole hog and buy a point and shoot remote. That’s how a lot of my photos are taken, on a tripod. It’s simple to set up and you can keep playing around with the angle of each shot. Plus, pop your camera on burst mode and capture 5 – 10 photos each time you click the button. Obviously this works best when you set a timer so you can get in to position for the shots. My tripod was my blogging BFF when I first got going.

Try Lifestyle Posts
I’m not saying outright stop fashion blogging, but if you are finding it difficult to fit lots of outfit shoots in, consider other posts that would also fit within the theme and content of your blog already. Some of the most gorgeous blogs use carefully curated flatlays or photography from their days out and about. Plus, I do love to see a little variety from a blog too.

Local Photography Students
To create their portfolios some students like to take on extra projects, it’s a great way to tap in to semi-professional photographers who are at the very start of their journey. Plus, it’s a fab opportunity for them to gain experience whilst studying too. And, whilst us bloggers hate the word “exposure” consider covering their time with a small fee or a coffee, or their travel expenses.

Train your Other Half

If you have the patience to sit down and discuss how you want your blog photos to look, it might be worth a shot even if you do have an un-creative other half. Sometimes all they need is a little nudge in the right direction. Use Pinterest and other blogs for a source of inspiration to get their mind ticking about how they can help and make your style posts look better. You never know, it might be the start of something beautiful.

Work with a Professional Photographer
If all else fails, working with a professional doesn’t always have to break the bank. I work with the lovely Matt McCormick, like many other Leeds Bloggers for a very small fee. He knows exactly how I want my photos to look and ultimately, knows his way around a camera. For the sake of spending some £££ it’s most definitely worth it. I have found that working with a professional, more brands and PR’s have contacted me wanting to work with me. So by spending my pennies, I’m probably receiving a much better return on investment.

I do hope that my ideas have got you thinking about how you can make the most of fashion blogging without a creative other half! Do you have any tips that I could use too? I’d love to hear from you!

Haha this post made me giggle! My OH is so bad with photos they always end up blurry, but he tries!! I’m slowly training him as time goes on and hopefully he’ll start getting the hang of it…

Fantastic post Bee! So so true! They just don’t get it! :p
I tried the tripod, but I could never get myself in focus. I must prefer directing the hubby.lol
I looked into photography groups and students, but our colleges don’t seem to offer courses and the groups are all men that like pictures of the scenery.lol
My hubby has got there with pics. I do wish he’d use the Pen over the Canon. I showed him some blogs pictures of what I wanted and we have some way to go, but we’re getting there. I’ll keep him a little longer.lol

      Hey Caroline,
Thank you so much! That means a lot to me. These photos have been directed by me to my husband too, but these are the only photos we got, HA!
That’s a shame that the colleges don’t do anything like that near you.

I have a tripod (boyfriend bought it for me) but I also have a boyfriend with a great eye for photography. I have the opposite problem where he wants to take hundreds of photos because he’s not quite happy with the lighting or the dodgy double chin I managed to give myself! x

Oh my word, that would be the dream! Use him, use him, use him. Haha! It’s fantastic that you have a boyfriend that can do that for you.

Oh god, asking my other half to do my outfit photos is SO stressful, she just takes 2 or 3 (some blurry) then gets frustrated if I ask for some more… then I’m doing a kind of Chandler-esque smile as I feel awkward being ‘such a poser’ (her words not mine, i’m actually pretty embarrrassed) so yes…. I need a tripod, it’ll be easier on us all! Glad it’s not just me! ha! 😉

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Your comment really made me chuckle, I literally feel EXACTLY the same way. I always feel so stupid trying to pose, because HE JUST DOESN’T GET IT! This comment really required caps lock at certain points, because I get alllll the feels!

Brilliant tips! I have tried to take my own photos but always end up getting a friend to do them instead. I have a couple who I have trained well and then make sure they take photos for me if I see them. It’s such a pain!

I have a couple of friends who I’ve tried to train too, sometimes it goes ok, sometimes it goes bad (LOL!) but I guess if they aren’t into photography that much, I can’t expect miracles can I? Ha!

Oh Bee, you have no idea how much I understand you on this! My ex-boyfriend would just click on the camera button without even looking through viewfinder and take ‘pictures’, or so he thought!

My current boyfriend on the other hand is more patient but he just doesn’t like spending more than 5′ on a photoshooting, plus he doesn’t understand that a picture is not good or proper for a blogpost if it is blurry or doesn’t have the best lighting or has the view of a bin on the back!

Hence I am left with taking 99% of my pictures myself and doing more lifestyle and travel posts than fashion posts.

HOWEVER, what your husband and my boyfriend (and every one else’s other half) should realise and be grateful for is that all these free trips that they get to experience trough our blogs are due to our blogging effort and it is shame if they cannot have the patience to take PROPER blog pictures!
So my advice is, next time he says ‘we can’t be long’ tell him that next time you are offered a trip he is not coming on 😉
    Simple as this!

GIRLLLLLLLL, that last sentence is exactly what I say to him each & every time. I think he’s secretly a little bit jeal that he isn’t up to a professional photographers standard and he likes to think when he does something he excels. Bless him, but in fairness, he generally is shit hot at everything he does (the little shit! LOL!)
I have to mix it up too as there would just be some really awkward posts now. I’m getting accustomed to working with Matt, so finding that when I do do style posts I’m getting really picky and if it’s not right, IT’S NOT RIGHT! Ha! I must be a nightmare.

Yep, know this scenario all too well. From complaints “This is how I spent my Saturday – taking pictures of you” to some really random pictures during a heartless click session. In the end they still do it but not with passion. I’ve tried to convince mine to go to a photography class, he said “you need to see your blogging friends more often”. I’m going to release a similar post later in the week, which might contain THE solution to all our fashion blogger problems hahahahaah
