I’ve always had the idea in my head that you have to be down in London to make anything of yourself in the blogging world. I’m sure a few of you (read: a lot of you!) will probably feel exactly the same way. With major companies mainly all based down south it’s normally very difficult for us Northerners to get a look in when it comes to opportunities and events. But, over the last year I have noticed a massive change. The offerings are becoming plenty for us online blog warriors up here and we are starting to make some noise and it’s not going unnoticed. Blogging from the North just got a whole lot more exciting…

Northern Bloggers

Like many other Bloggers, I work full time and use this space as a creative outlet away from my day to day job. It’s somewhere I started writing word vomit (yup, still do!) when I was on my day off from my previous job. I worked weekends so became a bit of a loner as everyone I knew worked Monday to Friday. It made me feel connected with the outside world, somehow. Then I got engaged to my (now) wonderful husband and following that, my Grandad turned very ill during our very intense Wedding planning. My blog kind of fell by the wayside. I was so consumed with life that it wasn’t a priority anymore. Then once the wedding was over and luckily my Grandad left hospital after many months I was kinda at a loss what to do with my time because suddenly it wasn’t filled with making bed side chatter with family at the hospital or deciding what material I wanted for the hand made bunting or what the main course should be for the Wedding breakfast. That’s when my blog became my life line.

In the July 2014, about a month after we got married, I came across a blog event that was being run in Leeds by some fellow Bloggers, Blog Yorkshire. More of us existed and this excited me to the very core! I booked the tickets and kept ticking off the days till the event. I had never done anything like that before. I was nervous, what if no-one liked me? What if people poo-pooed my blog and I wasn’t good enough to be there. Suffice to say, the day arrived and I turned up at the venue like a little bag of nerves and graciously met the organisers and other Bloggers that were there, intro’s over & I was making new friends. There was no malice or turned up noses, we all had common ground and our passions all related to writing words on the world wide web, be it Fashion, Beauty or Lifestyle related topics. I’m so thankful for that event because I have made so many wonderful friends and continue to see a lot of them at other events and socially, too.

That’s where it all started. That bloggers-ran event started a bit of a wave within Leeds. Not just for those who wrote their feelings and views online, but also the brands too. They started to realise that there was a whole army of us up here, waiting and wanting to work with them and shout about things and their products too. We are quite a force to be reckoned with us Yorkshire Bloggers. Fun, witty and accessible. I pride myself on being just that, my outfits never cost a fortune you see here on the blog & when travelling I take a more budget friendly approach (with a few little luxuries thrown in too!) I wanna be that person you can have an amazingly fun night with, laughing and joking away but also the one you could turn to if you ever needed a little cry or a chat about something personal. I like to think that my #LOLZ show in my posts and in person too.

Recently I have started working with a local photographer called Matt McCormick. A great guy. Just a really genuine, nice and very talented guy. When taking blog photos I’ve always had to balance my camera on a tripod or get my husband to reluctantly take photos for me. And whilst I’ve made do for a very long time I felt my blog just needed upping to that next level (if, and I say if loosely, that my blog would ever go anywhere than just a hobby.) It’s people like Matt who are giving me confidence in myself but also helping me take my Blog up that extra notch too. We’ve been crying out for someone like that up here. To give you a bit of an insight, I was contacted by seven brands between the Tuesday my post with Matt’s photos went live to the Friday of the same week – so I saw a huge difference. I worked with him again this weekend just gone too and couldn’t wait to share these posts with you. He’s tapped in to a hugely influential group of people up here & it’s so nice to see a creative working with Northern Bloggers. We are so used to just seeing mainly the LDN crew working with pro-photographers on their posts. So, I really hope you are enjoying his work with me and the many bloggers he’s going to be working with in the future, too.

Northern Blogger

I know I’m never going to be a pro at this, heck, my writing isn’t perfect & I’m not always going to be able to do photo shoots with Matt, ‘cos you know, full time job & all that but I hope that along with many other Northern Bloggers we are making waves in the Blogosphere and proving that rightly so you can blog up North!

Do you feel like Northern Bloggers are being recognized more? Or do you feel that you don’t have the opportunities up here? I’d love to know your thoughts in the comments below.

Firstly can I just say your outfit is ON POINT!
& this is a fantastic, I feel really lucky that I moved to London and it has bought so many opportunities, but I recently attended a northern blogger meet organised by a friend and it’s so good that the old “you need to be in London to succeed” myth is being dispelled more each and every day

      Hey Fran,
      Thank you so much.
I think it’s great that you have so many opportunities. I’d love to see it really at a level playing field soon, but for now I’m really happy with how it has progressed over the last year or so 🙂

Good luck with everything! It sounds like you are loving it down there.

YOU LOOK SO HOT. I need to get touch with Matt when I pluck up the courage to dip my toes in the fashion pond again for sure – these photos are stunning! I feel like technically no, you don’t need to live in London to be successful in blogging. If you work hard enough you could do it from anywhere! BUT that said, I do think it’s substantially easier if you do live further south…

      HEY YOU!
Who made you so super cute? He is a genius, so easy to work with. It makes me feel more “pro” – in terms of “posing” and stuff, there is nothing more demoralising than trying to take a photo with your camera/tripod and having nothing to really work with or jeer you on!
I completely agree, it’s not a level playing field for us Northerners just yet but it’s heading in the right direction. Please don’t leave me for LDN! Haha!

Ngl as idillic as living in London sounds (minus the sky-high living costs) I don’t think I could ever leave Yorkshire! Especially not forever! I just love it up here toooooo much! xxx

PHEW! It looks pretty on photos (am I right?) but Yorkshire is just equally as amazing! Stay with meeeeee!

Yay for us Northern (esp Yorkshire!) bloggers! 🙂 We rock. I have def seen more opps lately, but then, I wasn’t really looking before I suppose.
Can I just say, you are absolutely killing it in your photos lately? I am certain it isn’t just Matt’s talent (unless he did your hair too?!), though he is obviously ace. If I ever become brave enough to face the camera I’ll certainly be after his contact details. And if he’s too busy I’d be happy to meet for a day of mutual outfit post photography sometime too (though prob after the wedding, bit busy til then!)! xx

      Hey yoooou!
Us Northerners are pretty darned cool aren’t we. Of course the Yokshire ones are just amazing too! Hehe!
You really must, it’s built up my confidence no end! I’d certainly be up for shooting together, having someone there to keep you occupied really helps too.
How is the wedding planning going? How long now?

This is such a good post Bee! This is exactly how I felt when I was living in America – like you know that you deserve to be a contender but people just disregard you when you aren’t in London. So glad there are more opportunities for people in Leeds now!! xxxx also those boots are fierce

I’m from the South, but very much outside London, and I feel similarly! It’s very rare to have events that wouldn’t cost me a bomb to get to.

    1. QueenBeady Avatar

That’s the main bug bear of mine! Costs to get to London. It always puts me off, but, luckily we have a lot of events in Leeds / Yorkshire now 🙂

Even though I live right in the big bad capital city (I’m not actually from the UK though) I still feel like these ‘opportunities’ that are supposed to be prevalent are actually harder to come by – even more so than if you’re elsewhere! Or maybe I’m just being sheltered hahaha. I know many bloggers who live and work in the North + Scotland and they are definitely making waves over there, more understated and crafted feats are emerging and I think I’d much prefer that over some big commercial brands ‘uniting’ bloggers in London… but that’s just me!

For me, I think it’s all about finding what outlet you’re most comfortable with and then finding your buddies who got your back 🙂

p/s LOVE THOSE BOOTS !?!/!?!? YES I LUV IT

      Hi Cherie

Firstly thanks for stopping by. I wonder with London that it just seems to be the same people getting the opps? Would you agree?

I love how in the north there’s a diverse range of bloggers working with brands and it gives me so much hope.

I love how the north is really starting to be championed!

I kinda am in love with these boots too 😉

        Cherie

Yeah definitely – you make a very good point. You end up seeing the same people getting these opportunities and they say all the same things ‘it’s great I love it’ etc. and there’s not much variation in opinions.

You know what they say… Northern powerhouse 😉

        1. QueenBeady Avatar

That’s exactly it, sometimes a little change is good. And it’s great to see!

This has made me feel a lot better about moving back up north. I’ve been in London for the last 3 years and I have noticed that thinks seem to go on here more then back home so reading this post has made me very happy that there is a busy blogging scene there too. I can’t wait to be a Yorkshire blogger again.

Also these pictures are amazing. I think we all need a matt in our lives hehe. Love the dress too it’s stunning.

      Hi Hannah

I am so glad my post made you feel better. It’s crazy just how much it’s evolved up here & it’s lovely to see people are heading back.

There’s nothing wrong with being in London or the opps that are down there, it’s just nice to see fresh blogs/people every once in a while! I think the north has some of the most diverse, relatable and exciting blogs out there!

Hope I see you at some events soon!

I think it’s great that more blogs from the North are getting the recognition they deserve. I’m yet to experience anything for myself but it’s nice to see local people getting invited to events and working with brands. Makes me think I need to use my location to my advantage in the future. =^-^=

Stunning photos and an even more stunning subject. You keep being amazing. You’re one of the only blogs of your type that I actually follow and enjoy so you’re obviously doing everything right. Plus, it’s much nicer to see photos shot up here than in London. There’s only so many white Georgian houses you can pose in front of haha

Thank you so much Danielle, that really means everything to me. I don’t want to just be a “fashion blogger” – I want people to connect with the words & feel like they can access the styles I put together to.
