Bee went to Budapest #1 | QueenBeady

Bee in Budapest

When I start choosing the photo’s for my travel posts I can go a bit, shall we say, OTT. I have to apologise in advance for all the photos! For me travel is a necessity in life. You learn so much about culture, history and all of this beautiful Earth’s hidden secret’s when you hop, skip and jump over the pond.

After much deliberating of where Mr C & I were going to go during our week off at Easter we concluded we wanted somewhere from a local airport, short flight and relatively ‘’cheap’’ once we were there. Then the world wide web threw the most perfect deal at us on Jet2Holidays to visit Budapest. A city that neither of us had really given much thought to. I now ask myself, why the heck not? Because it truly is an awe-inspiring place.

It is one impressive city which spans over 525.2 km² & on every corner there is something that will inspire you and make you wander further down the clean, beautiful street.

Day 1.

After an early flight from Leeds Bradford we were eager to find the hotel so we ushered a taxi from the airport which cost approx 7500HUF, that’s roughly £18-£20 depending on the rate that you managed to bag on your foreign currency. We were staying at the Mercure Korona Hotel which is really close to Vaci Street, The National Museum and The Great Market Hall. After ditching our stuff we headed to the latter to try some of Hungary’s finest street food. I went for a Gyros which is a pitta with plenty of chicken, sauce and salad. A pretty messy affair, as was James’ mammoth ‘’HunBurger.’’ After having a wander through the Hall it was plain to see that the Hungarian’s love their cured meats!

We were so tired that we had to wander back to the hotel for an afternoon snooze so we were ready for the evening.

Budapest Soup in Bread cake

We ate at Fatal Restaraunt on Vaci Street and we were so impressed with their food! The soups were a meal in themselves and we really struggled with mains, and there is no wonder why. Mine came in a rather large crusty bread roll! But, it was worth it to try the delicious stew soups that they create.

We tried not to get back too late because we knew that we wanted to get exploring the next day. And after we had stuffed our faces with the local cuisine we were both feeling pretty sleepy.

Day 2.

Budapest 3

If there’s one thing you can say about Budapest, it’s that you will never be bored. There is always something to do or see. A guidebook says that it would take you a couple of attempts at visiting this great city to uncover all of it’s wonderful sights and secret’s.

After crossing Liberty Bridge from Pest to Buda, we decided we were going to tackle the very high, very treacherous Gellert Hill to get up close and personal with Budapest’s very own Statue of Liberty.

Budapest 5

By the time we got to the top, I ain’t gonna lie to you, I was sweating like a pig. But the views are worth it. I felt like I’d really conquered it especially considering how unfit I am. A well-deserved Hungarian beer was sipped after this.

Budapest 7

And not to un-do all the walking with the beer we set to walking back down the other side passing the King’s Statue and headed towards Buda Castle. Once you set foot here, you are almost transported back in time. Everything is so picture perfect. It is like a fairy tale, you can almost see the Prince riding in on horseback, whilst the Princess gazes out of her juliette balcony over the Danube waiting for someone to save her. Her knight in shining in armour. I know it sounds far fetched but anyone who has been there I’m sure will agree with me. It’s magnificent.

Budapest 20

Buda Castle

Budapest 8

As you pass through the castle you end up at another famous site, The Fisherman’s Bastion. It was teaming with people so we didn’t actually walk round, but again the attention to detail of this perfect architecture was second to none. If there is one thing the Hungarian’s do right, it’s their buildings! It’s something you’d imagine would in Game of Thrones or something.

Budapest 10

Budapest 9

We set back to the hotel after this, which was one hefty trek back, but it had been worth it for the spectacular views that ensued.

That night we ate at La Coppola where we sipped on Cosmopolitans for me and Beer for Mr C. The food was delicious here, an authentic Sicilian experience!

As we wandered around we realised that most sites we had visited were free entry, unless you wanted to head in to the museums along the way making it an enjoyable and cheap experience all round.

After realising that it is pretty photo heavy post I thought it’d be great to share day 3 & 4 with you in a separate post. I hope you will join me tomorrow for part 2.

Have you been to Budapest? What was your favourite part of the City?

We went to Amsterdam, Hamburg, Berlin, Prague, Krakow and Budapest. Didn’t get to explore Hamburg much but seemed like a nice place. Also would have loved to stay in Krakow for longer – we just went to Auschwitz which was incredible but from the bits of Krakow we went round it was a cool place! I want to do it all again!

Great post, can’t wait to visit myself in June for my wedding anniversary! A couple of friends went for new year and tried to explain the whole soup in a crusty bread roll thing – glad I now know what they were talking about
