The art of slow living. A hashtag on instagram that has garnered hundreds of thousands of photos linked to it. It is something we all seem to talk about on social media but is it something we all really practice? This weekend was the first weekend in a long time where I have had zero plans. To me, it was a blissful thought. There was no frantic rushing around trying to make plans and fill my diary with things to do. Instead, I filled my time “on a whim.” It was spent around the house and pottering around. What might sound mundane to some, it was actually something I needed for my soul. I finally got to practice #theartofslowliving for realsies.

With no plans, there was no time scale to stick to, which meant that on both Saturday and Sunday I could have a well needed lie in. And then when I woke up feeling refreshed from a good nights sleep, I’d spend the rest of the morning in my pj’s pottering about until I decided it was time to leave the house.

We went on long dog walks to test out my new Lakeland boots (which btw happen to be the comfiest walking boots I’ve ever owned) in both rain and shine. And whilst doing so we spent Sunday foraging for sloe berries near our home. We love making homemade gin and for years we’ve searched high & low for them with no joy, and finally we found a very fruitful (excuse the pun) tree filled with the juiciest (yet bitter) sloeberries. A full pound of them in fact, and we are going to head back for more. That means we’ll spend an afternoon piercing them and prepping them to go in the gin to absorb for over a year. Now that is slow living!

We now get our shopping delivered, not because we feel like we have that middle class privilege but because it free’s up so much more time for us. (It’s also a godsend for keeping to a budget) I ordered lots of fresh produce. I was determined that this weekend we would spend a lot of time cooking. So, I spent Sunday cooking up a mean feast for Mr C and I. A lamb roast dinner with all the trimmings, with a home-grown apple and pear crumble with custard to finish off. Quite frankly, I know I outdid myself. With no rushing around, I was completely at ease whilst I was cooking and it felt blissful. I even had time to catch up with everyone by posting a couple of insta-stories!

I’m currently sat at my laptop on this Sunday evening (you’ll be reading this on Monday) and despite our weekend being a quiet one, I feel so blumming content right now. And, not in a smug way. Just in a way that I realise that I don’t have to be running around like a headless chicken all the time trying to keep up with everything and everyone.

Sometimes a weekend at home, just pottering about, doing “life” things is exactly what we need. The art of slow living doesn’t need to have a fancy practice that goes with it, it’s just about soaking up the now, taking things at a slower pace and not being restricted with time. That’s what it means to me. This could quite possibly be one of the most boring posts you may have ever read, but this weekend has been a massive eye opener to me, because I didn’t realise just how much I needed it.

When was the last time you had a slow weekend like that? Do you make sure you have at least one weekend like this?

I love weekends like this. I had a slow weekend too, I did nothing apart from practice some proper self care and clean my entire house. Even the nooks I hate to clean, and I woke up Sunday feeling so content and happy as I could relax with candles and Harry Potter and biscuits all day!

I love sloe picking too, and I make sloe gin loads – need to get out for some sloes soon for this year actually, so thanks for the reminder! xxx

Having time to actually properly cook is one of my favourite things – I so rarely get a weekend like this, but because we’ve just had two weeks off and got plenty of jobs done in that time I actually managed to have a slow one this weekend, two lie-ins, coffee in bed and general pottering around doing bits and bobs but with no real urgency – dreamy!

Quiet weekends are always excellent. I’m the same as yourself, I try not to book anything in and keep it as quiet as possible. I love big walks – I just bought myself some new walking boots – then getting home, putting the fire on and to either enjoy a good film or read lots, preferably with a slanket wrapped around me. I’ve only recently reclaimed my weekends, so it’s a wonderfully novel experience! Hooray for slow weekends!

I love having a quiet weekend where you can just fully take time out to do what ever you want – it definitely helps to refresh your brain!!

Oh love I’m totally with you on this! My step mum is always saying to me that I try to cram 289618614826 things into one day, which I absolutely do and I know it’s ridiculous! I almost feel guilty if I slow down or don’t do anything! I remember a few months back when I woke up on a Saturday and didn’t ‘need’ to do anything, it was absolute BLISS! I took myself shopping and out for lunch then organised my room, it was the most content I’d felt in the longest time!

I love having a slow weekend with no big plans, so we don’t have to rush around. I do our shopping online sometimes too because like you say, it frees up so much time and I don’t buy too much food. I LOVE sloe gin – I wouldn’t want to wait for a year, but I guess it will be worth it! xxx

Days like these, or even evenings, always seem to be the best ones of my life, especially if I get to spend time with my family and catch up with friends. Being busy is definitely glorified nowadays and many of us forget what it’s like to not have plans and a million things on our to-do list and when those moments finally come it feels wonderful. I’m glad to hear you had such an enjoyable weekend and those photos are the cutest! xox

I LOVE slow living. And I absolutely LIVE for slow weekends! We had the first one in nearly a year last weekend. We really needed it after a manic year of wedding planning, and then the wedding. We slept until 10am, a real luxury, and had a cooked breakfast. Then just watched films, read a book and played games. It was fab. Cute cat, by the way 🙂 x http://www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x

Slow living is something I love. Usually when we are holidaying in Devon. We stay in a beautiful barn that we have been visiting for the last 300 years. Or that’s what it seems like. Dog walks, rowing round the large pond, visiting the barn cats, or forme creating something yummy at the scrubbed pine table in the kitchen. Huge windows overlook the garden, woods and pond. Yes cooking or baking on holiday for my family is my idea of slow living. Bring on next Easter!

Oh Bee. How I adore you.
You. Your blog. Your writing. Your photography.
I truly wish we lived closer so that I had more time to spend with you.
I’d love to say I live the art of slow living, but quite frankly, if you have a child, this is not possible.lol
However. There are times, especially now he’s at school and also during my 5am starts, that I feel this ease. Which is a reason why I start at 5am. It was really getting to me being woken up by a child and starting the day being pushed out of my own bed or waffled to about god knows what. My 5am start allows me time to wake up on my own accord. My own way. Some reading. Meditation. And breathe.
I do like a potter and it is always a (miracle) when we have nothing to do on a weekend, but I do sometimes get bored and have to find something to do. But I think this will change with the cooler months. A sofa, blanket and a brew and I’ll be truly content.

I am loving your outfit, secondly thank you for introducing the art of slow living to me, I don’t think I ever get to practise it to be honest. I’m going to take this on board and on my next day of get myself some slow living.
