WHAT TO DO WHEN IT RAINS WHEN YOU’RE ON HOLIDAY | QUEENBEADY

rua de joao gago

We spend all year saving for that special holiday and a huge percentage of why us Brits decide to go abroad is to escape the grim weather we have here in the UK. So what happens when it rains when you are on holiday? We stomp our feet, try do a “sunshine dance” and do that terribly British thing where we moan about things we can’t change. But, truth be told there is some beauty in amongst the madness and a little bit of rain won’t hurt anyone. Let’s face it, no-one wants to worry about whether it’s going to rain on holiday but why not have a bit of a back up plan, just in case? I’ve put a few tips together of how you can make the most of your time if it rains when you’re on holiday…

1. GO OUT IN THE RAIN. Embrace the cold or mild drops and let them soak you through. It’s pretty therapeutic and so against the norm to actually enjoy it but there’s something so magical about it. Sing, dance, run in to the sea. Let’s your inhibitions go wild and enjoy the blissful moment of madness.

2. START READING. I love reading on holiday, nothing beats a good book in the relaxation stakes. When on holiday it’s the one place I can fully indulge and get lost in a book with no other distractions. Let the rain patter against the windows, get curled up in chair and read to your hearts content.

3. PLAN. For most places, the rain doesn’t last forever, so grab whoever your with and crack open the ol’ TripAdvisor app. Plan where you are going to go for dinner or where you are going to visit next once the storm passes by, because forward planning always makes me giddy.

4. ENJOY THE STORM. I don’t know about you, but when I’m tucked away inside I love watching a good ol’ thunder & lightening storm, don’t you? As long as it doesn’t come too close I’ll be fine. A little anecdote was when we were on our honeymoon we had some amazing storms and the lightening struck the sea right in front of our hotel. Scary, but phenomenal all the same.

5. WORK YOUR WAY THROUGH THE TOP SHELF. Let’s face it, if you haven’t got a cocktail in hand on holiday, did it really happen? To wash away the blues why not head to the hotel bar and grab a few cocktails, trying a different one each time. A great way to make things more fun and a little less dull. Because when cocktails happen, it’s never dull.

6. HOLD THE PHONE. TALK. Social media and gadgets have become at the forefront of why we don’t open our mouths and speak to one another anymore. Put down your phone and talk. Talk about life, plans and everything else in between. The art of communication is a beautiful thing so enjoy it.

7. MAKE A FORT. Grab the duvets and sheets off the bed (heck, the maid will make your bed the next day so it’s a perfect excuse!) and create a little fort, chill out in it. Talk, read, play on your iPad or whatever your little heart so desires. But, it’s something different isn’t it?

8. GO SWIMMING. Providing it’s not thunder & lightening (obvs, see point 4) Get in the sea or pool and go for a rainy swim. It’s pretty invigorating. A crazy, bizarre experience and on the plus side you’ll probably have the whole beach or pool to yourself. Win win.

9. GO OLD SCHOOL. Play charades or cards. Do the things you used to do on holiday when you were kids to pass time, before iPhone and tablets became a thing.

10. HAVE SEX. Does that one really need an explanation? (OH HEY MUM. SOZ.)

11. WATCH FOREIGN TV CHANNELS. You probably won’t understand what anyone is saying, but it’s always fun guessing and making up a million and one scenarios about what they could be saying. “Y hoy el tiempo va a ser soleado con una probabilidad de lluvia” can easily be translated to “I’m pregnant again & I don’t know who the baby Daddy is?” (I bet you’re all heading over to google translate rn.)

12. ORDER ROOM SERVICE. We did this in Mexico and I’ve never been so thankful to see a burger or a chocolate brownie in my entire existence!

Do you have any words of wisdom you’d like to share or hints and tips for if the dreaded rain decides to visit you whilst you’re on holiday? I’d love to know! Although fingers crossed I do hope you are all heading to sunnier climes this Summer.

Great list! I’ve been plagued with rain on a few recent holidays, and we’ve just pushed through it. Not only does sightseeing in the rain make for some awesome (awkward) photos, but it makes walking into a pub to warm up feel all that much more amazing!

Great list – I do love curling up with a book when there’s a thunder & lightning storm. When we went to Portugal a few years back, there was a massive thunder & lightning storm the first night we were there. It was lovely to sit and watch, to be honest! x http://www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x

I remember when I was in Paris and it rained for the whole holiday. I just had to do everything anyway, I ended up going on the rides and Disney in the rain.

I only learnt the word inclement in Florida last year! Mid day storms had us sat on a balcony watching the weather were almost the perfect break in the day.
