Why I’m Thankful for Technology | QueenBeady

IMG_4798

I felt I just had to write this post on the spot. I’ve just come off the phone from a Facebook video call with my Nana & Grandad. It really made me smile. Not only the fact that they are using technology in their late sixties and (sorta) bossing it, but it just made me really happy that I can do that in 2K16 and not get blown up by the Millennium Bug, ya’know? I can be interactive with my family without so much as clicking a mouse button. We are more connected than ever and I’m so thankful for technology in that respect. Here we go again, the ol’ word vomit is about to happen…

As I’ve mentioned before my Grandad was very, very poorly a couple of years ago before our wedding. Luckily he came home, but he’s just been back in for an operation to sort out some of the underlying problems he has had since he came out. I don’t drive and live about 20 minutes away from my family. Whilst that doesn’t sound a lot, there is no public transport near me that gets me to them quickly or efficiently, so I rely heavily on my husband getting me there (yes, I’m that loser at 26 years old who doesn’t drive!) so to be able to connect with them verbally over the phone is my saviour and now they’ve got Facebook, I can actually speak to them and see their faces at the same time. Almost as if we are in the same room. Isn’t that amazing?

Technology may be many things. It can be tedious. Painful to work with. And sometimes, “disconnect” us ever so slightly if we use it too much but I am so grateful that it has advanced in the way it has. Take blogging for example. Many moons ago, my word vomit would have been written by hand in a fluffy pink “Bang on the Door” diary or notebook (you remember the ones!) It was there that that I’d write my inner most feelings and thoughts, instead, fast forward to 2011 (which is when I think I first started this blog) I put finger to keyboard and did it online instead. My blog, and many others, would not be what it is today if it wasn’t for the invention of the internet.

Some people complain that phones, laptops and other electronic items are taking over our lives, but with every generation there is something new to be explored and understood and it just so happens that in this day & age it’s the advancement of technology. But, on the up side, doesn’t it bring us so many happy memories? At the click of a button on my iPhone I can capture a moment in time that in years to come could be the only thing that can help me remember it. Heck, I’m terrible at remembering things anyway, so I’m grateful for all the visual reminders I can get! It keeps me connected to my loved ones when things get difficult or I just need to blow off some steam. It’s also somewhere I can go online and ask all my blogging friends what they think about something, it’s united me with all these like minded people I would have never met, ever. It is just mind-blowing when you think about it.

I went to dinner with a friend a week ago and I had to take photos of the food as I was doing a review for my blog. My immediate response each time I picked up my camera between courses was “I’m sorry.” or “Sorry, I just gotta get this shot and then I can eat.” She looked at me dead in the eye and said, “STOP SAYING SORRY FOR TAKING PHOTOS. YOU NEED TO DO IT & I REALLY DON’T MIND.” She totally understood that I had to do it but yet, I still felt like I had to apologise and make allowances for the fact that I use technology on a frequent basis. Why?

I admit I do rely on it far too much & I am the first to point that out. With my job, my blog and everything in between (you know the late night pinterest session when you just can’t get to sleep!) I need to be connected more than ever. There is no way you can deny that it is and will be here to stay so let’s embrace it and get to grips with how it can change our lives in a dramatic, positive way!

Do you rely on your phone / technology too much? How do you know when to say “enough is enough” or like me, are you thankful for the way it enhances your life? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with technology. I love how connected we are; learning about new places, cultures, activities, and foods is easier than ever! But, I find it can be hard to get away and truly disconnect.

      Hi Kate
I have to agree, I find it hard to disconnect sometimes too.

I loved this post! I am so thankful for technology it makes it easier to stay in touch with people and I’ve made friends from all around the world because of it.

I definitely rely on technology too much. But it’s what this generation is used to – and I’m not going to apologise for it. I try using it a little less now, do stuff away from the computer when I can (and I mean when I’m at work I am only on my phone on the way to/from, and on breaks).

I find taking breaks, going for walks and trying to get that balance between the two, without technology consuming me is the way to go! At least, for me. And like Ella said – most of my friends, if not all those I consider friends are those I have met online!

      HI Meg
I am the same, if it weren’t for technology, I wouldn’t have any of the opportunities I do now.
Also, I discussed with my husband how the heck did we used to Manchester airport without smart phones/sat nav nearly ten years ago? It baffles me.
There is a time and a place to try and switch off as you rightly say, too.

I think it’s all about moderation, isn;t it? I adore tech, and use it every day, but taking time away from it is so important too.

Completely agree, Claire! I try my best to step away from it too, but it can be difficult!

I’d forgotten about ‘Bang on the Door’! I was obsessed with that range, I think I had every piece of stationary available!

It is amazing what technology does for us, especially in terms of communication. A few years ago I would never have been able to talk to my cousin in Australia so easily but nowadays there is Facebook and Skype which literally means I can press a button and communicate with the other side of the world! It’s amazing.
I do think it is important to keep a healthy balance though, sometimes I worry that my online life is taking over my actual life and I have to step back and appreciate the things I can see and what’s going on around me. It is all about balance really! xx

HAHA! Did I just relive some childhood memories for you then?
Yes, it is fab isn’t it? You wouldn’t be able to communicate with your family in Oz as you say. Healthy balance is key too, sometimes I find it hard, but usually going for a long walk can help. Nature is just as good as tech!

It’s refreshing to see reliance on technology as a good thing (or at least not wholly negative!). I think technology is now a fact of life and when it connects us to so many people that we wouldn’t normally get such access to it has to be a good thing! Being able to facetime friends on the other side of the world is a godsend, although I totally feel you with the photo taking situation! I always feel guilty reviewing a restaurant with a friend I don’t usually do blog stuff around but it’s meant I’ve missed so many opportunities to create content because I’ve been too afraid of offending my company.
As always, it’s finding a balance that works for you but I think technology is only going to become a bigger part of our lives as it improves whether we like it or not!
    (Sorry for the essay!)

      Hi Tara
You have hit the nail on the head. Whilst we all seem to embrace technology, admitting that we love it (maybe a little too much!) seems taboo. I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for it. In my job, with my blog, connecting with family & friends. It’s all relative!

    AND I wouldn’t of met you 🙂

I love technology. It keeps me connected, it’s bought some amazing new people into my life, it makes life easier (Hungry House, anyone? Haha!) I think I’m guilty, as most of us bloggers are, of spending too much time on social media. But that’s because I don’t know when enough is enough. And I have FOMO. But generally I see technology as a good thing! x http://www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x

Completely agree. I know I need to say to myself that I must stop. I try and have a rule that passed 10pm/10.30pm I don’t go on my phone and it is about finding that healthy balance. Social media is key when it comes to my blog, and my blog is my baby so of course I love it!

I’m so happy to have stumbled on this post. I think it’s such a tricky thing to talk about because it has so many good sides but also terrible sides. For bloggers, it’s amazing because we wouldn’t have a hobby without internet! That being said, I hate how some people are glued to Twitter or Instagram because their life depends on how many followers they have. It’s almost as if they’ve forgotten to live in real life and can only blog. That sounds cynical, but I hope you sort of get what I’m trying to say.

My pleasure, thank you for stopping by, reading & taking the time to comment. I think as a whole technology has advanced in so many ways making life better, equally in same measures, I agree with you, some people can get slightly addicted. I’m very glad I grew up in a world where there wasn’t really such a thing as “smart phones” when we were younger. I say this like I’m millions of years old, but tech has advanced so quickly over the years. I completely understand what you are saying & I agree 🙂
