5 Reasons Why I Love Amsterdam | QueenBeady

Look Up

When I (often) discuss my love for Amsterdam I am quite frequently met with a glazed expression and the question, “of all the places in the world, Amsterdam?” and my answer is and always will be, YES. I have travelled to Amsterdam numerous times over the years with Mr C and I have also visited as a young child on countless occassions to visit family friends in Holland. It feels like I should have been born there. I feel so familiar with the destination that I’d happily walk the streets on my own, on a night. That can’t be said for various towns & cities in the UK. Not that I have to explain myself, but I thought if I could persuade you all with my 5 reasons why I love Amsterdam, you might just all come round…

Leidesplein Waffles

Dutch Pancakes

One. The Food

It seems so cliche, but really, ALL THE FOOD. There are areas in and around Amsterdam (such as Leidesplein & Rembrantplein) where restaurants line the street one by one. From Chinese to Steakhouses, from Pan Asian to Traditional Dutch delicacies, there is always room for more. The street vendors are pretty cool too, pop in a few euros and out pops burgers, croquettes and other fast food delights. You will be spoilt for choice when eating out so make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to try all the different cuisines when in Amsterdam.

Two. The Ease of Life

What city do you know that you can hop on a tram and be across the city within about 5 to 10 minutes flat? Not many. The ease of travelling in and around Amsterdam is something I quite often wish the UK would reflect upon. Even walking from street to street is much easier. More relaxed than anything I have ever known here back home. I could quite easily get lost wandering the streets and hop on a tram and find myself back to where I started. Back here I would worry if I had got on the right bus or train. There’s just something so easy about Amsterdam.

Chocomel

Three. Open Green Spaces in the Middle of the City

This mainly refers to VondelPark, a huge park (built on a swamp!) is such a refreshing place to go when you want to escape the buzz of the centre. Mr C & I wandered aimlessly for a good few hours and then made our way to a little cafe for a hot beverage to warm our cockles. I have never felt so relaxed to just escape it all. I can’t wait to spend a summer weekend there, lazing around & topping up a tan.

Bikes and Canals of Amsterdam

Four. It is only a 50 minute flight from Leeds Bradford Airport

Yes, you heard me. If you remove the check in time off a flight, it is quicker for me to fly to Amsterdam than it is for me to get on a bus to Leeds/York or Harrogate City Centre. How is this possible? But I’m not complaining! It just makes going back to my sacred city a whole lot easier. Thank the lord for Jet2 and their daily flights.

IAMSTERDAM

Five. The Culture

Amsterdam is home to so many museums and raw history that it’s hard to cram everything in to just one weekend break. We have found ourselves going back time and time again and missing various sightseeing because there is just so so so much. The one place that I have to recommend you go is the Anne Frank Museum, this has to be one of the places you must visit if you only ever intend to go Amsterdam once. So harrowing and bitterly raw it really gives an insight in to what a lot of the Jewish community was put through there during the War. With the Reijksmuseum renovations now complete I hope to return to view all of the collections.

Amsterdam is somewhere I could quite easily call home. In fact, I’m often found looking for apartments and houses there that in the hope one day I win the lottery and can have some sort of home there. A girl can dream! It’s a place that speaks to me through its history, it’s building and the beautifully kind people who reside there. I am at home when I am there.

Is there somewhere that you feel connected to like I do with Amsterdam? I’d love to know.

I am totally with you on this one, I love Amsterdam I have only been once but I really hope to go back again! I love how laid back and friendly the people are, I love all the cheese shops (I am a huge cheese fan and this made my whole weekend) I love the canals and how stunning the city is. Also why is it that Hot Chocolate tastes better in Amsterdam? It is actually the only place I have visited where I have come home and said I could live there!! Beautiful photos too lovely lady! XX

Exactly that, it really is completely and utterly relaxing, it’s largely down to the people as you say! Oh my goodness Gemma, THE FREAKING HOT CHOCS! They are made with chocomel and it is just to die for. I needs to get me some of that for home!

And I also really like the little wafer biscuit things they put on top!

Although I haven’t been back in a few years (and it’s more than a 50 minute flight away), Sydney has always been that city for me. It’s the first place that really felt like home for me.

Oh I wish I had the balls to get on a flight to Aus, it just seems so far away and tiring! It’s so nice that you feel at home there. It’s a wonderful feeling isn’t it?

Oh my goodness, I am yet to see the Dam in Spring or Summer funnily enough. I need to make it my mission to go when all the flowers are blooming. If you need to to hit me up with any Q’s, send ’em my way.

Okay, 50 mins from Leeds, daily?!? Dangerous! If it wasn’t for the wedding in the summer, I would be booking right now. Because I love Amsterdam too. I used to have to visit the Hague a lot for work (at the International Court of Justice!) and always made my office book me a hotel in Amsterdam, and organised a Friday afternoon meeting and a Monday morning one, just to be sure to get the weekend there! 🙂 I agree with you, it is the most wonderful place just to wander, and so laid back. One of my favourite evenings ever was spent on a barge on a canal there, drinking beer and laughing with friends on a summer night. The museums are also amazing if you like that kind of thing, and the shopping is pretty great too – plenty of high st offerings but also quirky and vintage coming out of your ears. Ste has never been – I feel a long weekend coming on…! xx

Would it be wrong of me to tell you that there are some reeeeeally cheap fairs on Jet2 at the moment? #oopssorry! Oh your job sounds absolutely dreamy and the fact that you have friends over there to keep you company and show you the local life is even more bodacious. You must book a post-wedding / honeymoon getaway to Amsterdam!

I think because people see it as a mainstream City Break that they forget it’s got so many uncovered treasures. Even if you just go for a wander it’s so magical (in my eyes anyway!) I demand you hop on a flight soon 😉

This is such a lovely post! I went to Amsterdam a few years ago and fell in love – it’s such a pretty and quirky city, and definitely felt the safest out of anywhere I have visited. I quickly felt really comfortable wandering around at night, soaking up the atmosphere and admiring the twinkling fairy lights above the canals. This has put me in the mood to go back!
I don’t think I have somewhere in the world which feels quite like ‘home’, but the closest to it would probably be Berlin – after our first trip there, me and my boyfriend were seriously wondering if it would be worth learning German to relocate! It’s such a cool city and sometimes I think you do just get a sense that somewhere is a good ‘fit’ for you.

YES! It is, isn’t it? Despite the bad rep it gets, I genuinely feel so safe. I don’t know what it is, maybe because it’s always buzzing from morning, noon & night that it feels like it’s constantly going.
I need to go to Berlin, everyone tells me how amazing it is and how I should get myself there. Not sure I can afford to fall in love with another place though haha!

I would love to go to Amsterdam, it looks like such a relaxed and beautiful city. My sister has been a few times and it sounds so nice – and I know it must be good to entice her back three times.

    1. QueenBeady Avatar

Oh Rosie, that it is, that it is. Relaxed is the best way to explain it. It’s relaxing because it is an easy city. It’s not uptight like our cities in the UK, it just does what it does and it’s so perfect.
You must book a trip with your sister!

You’ve convinced me! Haha. The food looks amazing! And when my OH and I were looking at an Amsterdam trip a year or so ago, we said to each other the Anne Frank Museum was a must visit. I can totally see why you love the city so much – and I can’t believe it takes only 50 mins to fly there! That’s about the same amount of time it takes me to visit my family, who live in the UK too! Crazy… x http://www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x

YAY! I’m so happy! I knew it wouldn’t take much for people to see it’s charm and fall in love with it.
It is so crazy isn’t it? Like I said, it takes longer for me to take a bus journey to my 3 nearest cities than it does to fly to Amsterdam, it’s beyond mind boggling! It really is.

      Hi Hannah,
It does but I think it’s gone a long way to make sure that people know that it’s not just about that. You must go, it really is wonderful.
