A night at the Hotel La Tour, Birmingham | QueenBeady

Flowers in Lobby

When an email lands in your inbox inviting you to come & try out a luxury hotel, the silly thing to do would be say no. So thank goodness I didn’t. I love travelling abroad as you’ll see from previous posts but I also love a long weekend away in the UK too. I had the pleasure of visiting the Hotel La Tour, Birmingham last weekend to review what the place had to offer. Now, I’ll be completely honest I wasn’t really taken with Birmingham itself (except of course, FOUR FLOORS OF SELFRIDGES, am I right?) It was a good two hour and a bit hours drive so we were starved. We picked up our first ever Five Guys, which in itself was worth the effort.

We arrived at the hotel around half 3 in the afternoon, we checked in which was pretty nice & breezy albeit felt a little corporate compared to other hotels we have stayed at. Possibly the clientele is mainly business most nights but expected a slightly more relaxed approach during the weekend. Looking around the lobby it was a bit open space that felt very welcoming. We were given the room 426 which overlooked what can only be described as a building site, however, I felt that no matter where you were placed you might have a similar view. But I think from our room you managed to get a not-so-bad view.

Now, let’s just get one things straight. I’m quite fussy with hotel rooms. One, I like to feel like it’s extremely clean and two, the bed is comfy. Both of those stipulations get a big, massive tick next to them. And so many places struggle to get this right. The bed was so ridiculously comfy that it made it ever so delicious to have a 2 hour power nap after our Five Guys burger. Boy, was it good.

Hotel La Tour Harrogate Spa Water

The room was plenty filled with coffee & tea facilities should you not want to venture too far from the hotel and the complimentary water was a big bonus as I never want to be too far from a glass of water in the night. Sitting on the chair looking out of the floor to ceiling window with a piping hot cuppa felt really therapeutic! It made the room feel so much bigger which was a really nice touch for a city centre hotel. It seems the attention to detail at the Hotel La Tour is second to none with it’s décor.

Hotel La Tour Shower

Even the shower room was just out of this world, from the pebble shaped sink bowl, to the waterfall shower and even the White Company toiletries which was such a lovely touch (and smelt even more divine when showering!) It truly felt like an experience in itself in the bright, airy bathroom.

Hotel La Tour Marco Pierre White

Despite the hotel being home to Marco Pierre White’s Chop House we decided not to eat there because it was pretty expensive, and well you know, January? So instead in the evening we headed out to find a curry house as isn’t that what Birmingham does best and we were delighted with the offerings from the restaurant, Curry Queen. We ate rather late and they didn’t serve alcohol so we decided to have a little drink in the hotel bar upstairs. James had a cold pint & I had a Strawberry Daiquiri. If cocktails are your thing then they range from £7.95 upwards which tends to be the going rate for a cocktail so I was pleasantly surprised that the hotel hadn’t hiked up the prices. There was a really nice ambience in the bar as there was a live, acoustic set playing. It made for a nice night having a good chat without feeling like you had music blasting in your ears.

Hotel La Tour Breakfast

Now let’s just get one thing straight, breakfast can be one of my favourite meals of the day if it’s done right and boy, oh boy, does the Hotel La Tour do it right. Breakfast is served where the restaurant is and is turned in to a big buffet style breakfast, where you can get a full english, fruit, cereals, waffles and pancakes. Of course, I had to go for the obligatory full works and piled both mine & Mr C’s plates high. Whilst I’d have loved to have finished it off with some pancakes and maple syrup I don’t think I could have handled it (that, and my waistline would never forgive me!) It was pretty busy when we went down and it was a little chaotic but once sat down and eating our breakfast it wasn’t too bad.

Selfridges

Check out was at 11am so we headed back to the room to pack and have a little lay down before we had to leave (read: savour how comfy the bed was.) The early departure time gave us one more time to check out Selfridges again before we had to leave giving me serious bag and shoe envy at every turn. WHY CAN’T I BE RICH? Ha! So overall out stay at hotel was pretty dreamy and as far as the standard of hotels go it’s one of the best we have stayed in. Unfortunately, Birmingham isn’t the top of my list of favourite places but if you want four floors of Selfridges to indulge in then you must really make it somewhere to head to. So, thanks for having us Hotel La Tour we had a thoroughly wonderful stay!

I’ve got to admit having been to Birmingham a few times because my dad lives there, it’s not the most inspiring place to visit. But the hotel sounds nice! And that breakfast looks delicious! Definitely somewhere we’ll keep in mind next time we head up to Brum! x http://www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x

I unfortunately, relate Birmingham to poor excuse of a “birth” father, so I too probably have pre conceptions about the place which is my own issues haha! But I didn’t get to see a whole lot of the place cos we got their quite late.

The hotel is pretty neat so if you do get chance you must stay there!

Haha you and I have more in common than we realise. My dad bailed before I was born. I never heard from him or met him until 2014. He tried really hard for a year then in January 2015 just dropped back out of my life with no warning and now doesn’t bother with me. So yeah, my dad is a pretty poor excuse for one too! I guess I don’t associate Birmingham with him though because for most of my life it was just Birmingham if that makes any sense!

I do love the Selfridges store there. It’s amazing! And we do go to Birmingham a few times a year to visit my friend so we will check this hotel out next time we go 🙂 xxx

Wow, we so do. My dad didn’t hang around either. First time I met him I was 14, also tried really hard for a year & then fucked off again. You know, at a real pinnacle time in a teenage girls life. He’s an arsehole. But clearly he was not cut out for it, it made me realise that I didn’t need him anyway. Although, I think a lot of my hate/anger harbours from being let down by him. Thank god I have a step father that is more of a dad than he will ever be!

I find a lot of UK hotels have that ‘business feel’ about them but it sounds like the room made up for it!

Very true, the Brita really undervalue their own worth in tourism – it’s such a shame!
The room definitely made up for it!

Birmingham definitely deserves a second visit! If you only visit the Bullring, which your post sounds as though that was where you had time to go, it probably does seem like any other city, but there is SO much here. If you do try again, try the Jewellery Quarter, or the villages of Moseley and Harborne. Birmingham has more Michelin stars than anywhere than in the country outside of London, an award winning street food scene, gorgeous art galleries, great independent coffee shops and fashion brands, two amazing indie cinemas, great theatres…

Excuse me going protective of my adopted home. I’ve moved around a lot, and Birmingham is the first place I felt at home. I really suggest giving it another go and escaping the Bullring. Independent Birmingham is a great place to get an idea of where the best places are.

      Hey Georgina,

You don’t have to apologise at all. Had I had known of all these amazing sounding places my trip could have been even more worthwhile. I did a little shout out on Twitter for advice and sadly no one really championed anything except a couple of bars. It would have been so great to go to some of those places that you mention! I needed that info haha! We had to set off quite late due to some other commitments meaning we didn’t get there too early (plus a two hour and half drive) so it meant minimal time exploring. Maybe next time we’ll be able to venture a little further if we get there earlier, I’ll make a note of all these places! Thank you.

It’s always tricky to get an idea of a place when time isn’t on your side. I didn’t expect to get much out of Birmingham when I moved here for work, but after two years here, I can’t imagine being anywhere else.

There’s nothing better than a power nap wen you first check into a hotel! 🙂 I don’t know Birmingham very well at all but tis does look like a lovely place to stay! x

Power naps are SHAMAZING! Although, whenever my husband has one he wakes up grumpy so he very rarely has them! haha!
