You may have read about our tour of Chichen Itza in my last Mexico blog post, so I see you are hungry for more. Part deux of this little trip, you might say? Okay, okay, they speak Spanish over there not French, but you catch my drift. As part of our Chichen Wonders tour with Thomson Holidays we also got to visit two more places, one of which was Hubiku, home to the popular Hubiku Cenote & the Tequila Museum, Mexico. It was in the mad heat of the day and after a whistle stop tour of the buffet dinner at Kin Restaurant, it was time to jump in to the cool waters of this natural sink hole.
When we arrived we were met by the cutest little, old VW beetles. We saw them everywhere on the highways, it would be every vintage enthusiasts dream! I just love how everywhere you turn Mexico is filled with colour, bright palettes and jazzy patterns. It’s an absolute feast for the eyes and so magnificent to see such a colourful existence in play.
The cenote itself is an ancient sink hole which measures a span of 70 metres in diameter, in other words, it’s pretty fricking big. It’s normally the result of a limestone collapse, from that it then exposes groundwater below. There are many Cenote’s within the Yucatan area of Mexico; they tended to be used by the ancient Mayan’s for sacrificial offerings. A little creepy albeit, pretty fascinating. You’d expect that with a sink hole that there would be some sort of chute that would suck everything in but it’s pretty interesting, especially for an ex-GCSE geography student (yes, I am that person!) because some cenote’s have been uncovered and explored by divers, whereby they have found cave systems that go on for miles! Mexico never ceases to amaze me. And, if you’d like to visit more of Mexico’s famous sink holes read all the 6 cenotes you could visit in Mexico.
Once we got changed in the cute little huts and made our way down a mammoth flight of stairs, trust me you do notwanna slip down there, I of course immediately wanted to get in to the freezing cold water as the afternoon sun was pretty warm. I wore my Freya Polka Dot Swimsuit that was sent to me courtesy of Beau Dame Lingerie* – I found it the perfect bikini, because they actually do proper cup sizes to mix and match the bottom sizes too. I find this so helpful when searching for one because I’m so different on my top half to my bottom! I took a flatlay shot photo for Instagram, see below, lets just say you would have got a full photo had I not have drank so many mojitos this holiday! Whilst I swam around the little black fish swam around darting in and around all the tourists and giving everyone the perfect opportunity to use their underwater cameras! Sadly, we forgot ours back home which led to me being a tincy bit annoyed (read; extremely bloody annoyed!)
A trip to a Tequila Museum is not complete without sampling many different varieties of the liquor. In total, this museum boasts up to 90 different flavours! Of course, we did try a couple but only made it so far by declaring the coconut tequila the best! The decision was final and with that a 1 litre bottle was purchased to bring home and share with family & friends. It’s absolutely delicious and urge you to try a sip if you ever find yourself at the Don Tadeo Tequila Museum! They even had the old wooden distillers to make this potent choice of poison – it was nice to delve in to the history of Mexico’s signature spirit!
With a bottle of tequila in tow, a slightly cooler body temperature & a rather fuzzy head from the tequila tasting it was time to hop on board the bus and head to Valladolid which is about half an hour away from the Riviera Maya. We only stopped there for half an hour but it was such a pretty place that I am going to dedicate another whole post to it, more so for the photos I captured of this traditional town.
The more I write these posts I find myself in a catch 22 situation. I am reliving some really great memories of our trip but at the same time I’m sad that I’ve had to come back to the UK just in time for the winter equinox. Thank goodness Jet2Holidays sent me a post-holiday blues care package – it’s crazy but did you know that 70% of people genuinely get the ”post-holiday blues” condition?! The box was filled with treats such as some fake tan, a lovely moisturiser, sweets and even a Pizza Express voucher so we can indulge in a little bit of waiter service to remind us of our gourmet-inclusive holiday at the El Dorado Seaside Suites (a post to come on this!) I know that this little box will get dipped in an out of when I’m finding the Autumn months a little harder – I guess I will just have to book another holiday (and that’s apparently one way people try to get rid of their blues!)
