Staying Safe during Festival Season | QueenBeady

Making daisy chains, sitting in circles singing music round a camp fire and having a wonderful time is exactly how I used to envisage Festivals before I started going to them. I’ve been going to Festivals since 2008, so some could say I’m an ”old timer” when it comes to being prepared for festival season. It’s a great time, filled with making lots of memories and enjoying some of the best music the world has to offer. By no means am I trying to detract from the wonderful atmosphere that Festivals have to offer you really do have to keep your wits about you in so many ways. I keep getting told that I’m too old to go to Leeds Festival (yikes, I’m only 25. I’m not sure if they are basically saying my life is over or not?) but I am determined I’m gonna keep going for years to come.

I just saw on Instagram that Lily Allen has just been involved in gas explosion in her caravan in the run up to Glastonbury, luckily she has only come off with a few minor burns (I say luckily as the situation could have been a lot worse!) This is just one of many reasons people need to stay safe. A lot of festivals have imposed bans of bringing gas to the camp sites. This really interesting article from Six out of Ten magazine talks about how maybe we are getting too old for the ”piss throwing” and the crazy, drunk loons that we come across in the mosh pit, but for me the atmosphere can be electric and if you are prepared to embrace that for one weekend then I think that is great.

I have a few tips to help you keep safe at festivals which I hope some of you will take on board or already practise when you pitch up your tent and soak up the festival atmosphere. It’s time for you to practice staying safe during festival season!

  1. Make sure you drink plenty of water. It sounds simple but its easy to get dehydrated! For every alcoholic drink, try have a bottle of water afterwards just to even it out. I know drinking is a big part of some people’s weekends but remember if you drink too much you can end up missing out on a whole lot of fun and some amazing music too.
  2. Keep together with friends and have each other’s backs. I do have a tendency to want to see bands that not everyone else does so it’s great to have a meeting point or making sure you all take along portable chargers so you can call each other throughout the festival to make sure you know where one another is at certain points of the day.
  3. The music tents can be pretty intense. For someone like me who can get quite claustrophobic make sure you know your limits of where you want to stand. There can be a lot of pushing and shoving (depending on the genre of music!) so make sure if you need to get out if you are feeling uncomfortable that you are near an exit!
  4. Festivals are all about making new friends and meeting new people, but do keep your wits about you. Half the time you don’t know these people or their character traits so when you are with people you don’t know make sure their are at least two of you just in case you find yourself in a sticky situation.
  5. The same goes for any drink spiking, despite stringent drug checks, they do manage to wheedle their way in to the camp sites/arenas. It’s very easy to get carried away, but make sure you don’t indulge in something you normally wouldn’t because you probably will regret it.

I’ve probably made it sound like a horrid place to be, but trust me, it’s always best to keep your wits about you in these situations. Touchwood I have had only pleasurable and fun experiences when I have been to any festival. But that is because I make sure I am careful when I am there.

What is your favourite Festival you’ve ever been to? Who are you looking forward to seeing play a gig at this years Festivals?

You’re so right, although festivals are great you do need to keep your wits about you. It was so scary to hear about the caravan gas explosion 🙁 I am not actually going to any festivals this year (book 🙁 ) but hopefully next year!! Also, you’re DEFINITELY not too old to go to a festival!! And far from it at that 🙂

That’s exactly it Sarah! Amazing fun, but if you start to lose control it can go a little crazy, for sure!
Aw bless you! Thank you – hitting 26 is quite scary for me. I think I’ll have to start ticking a different age group box on forms next. Scary times!

Such a good idea for a post Bee! Festivals are a lot of fun but you do have to think about these things and keep yourself safe etc! Even just the water is something I usually forget which is definitely not good when you’re drinking all day!!

Wishing I was going to a festival now wahhhh! Are you going to any this year?

      Hi Gabby,
This is so true! I love festivals as much as the next person, but I am so cautious when it comes to them too. I still have plenty of fun though.
I am going to Leeds Festival again, it’s a brilliant atmosphere. I’d love to go to VFest too, but not sure on pennies! You should get yourself to one next year.
