‘’Chug, chug, chug, chug. I’m being hoisted up to a window so I can let my hair blow in the wind, smell the open countryside and pass the heather growing in all it’s beautiful, purple glory. The smells of the steam are familiar. I giggle because the wind feels so funny on my face. I am so happy right now.’’

My younger self loved days out with my Nana & Grandad (I still do now) but there is one day out that always makes me beam ear to ear. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Before the days of Harry Potter it was just as magical back then as it is now. I don’t know what it is but from the moment you step through the entrance at Pickering Station you feel as though have been transported back in time to the 1940’s. Whether you were heading away on a glamorous first class seat to London or kissing a loved one goodbye as they headed for the war. You can just feel it in the air, the stories that people could tell you, I’m sure they would be mind blowing.

Before the day could start, I wanted to capture a few photos of the working warehouse where they still work hard on all the steam trains. It’s absolutely fascinating. And, nothing can set you up like a good cup of tea in the adorable little tea rooms that sits on site at the train station.

On the hour & a half long trip you call in at various stations, some of which you can stop off at and enjoy a leisurely day exploring & hop back on again later. It also stops off at Goathland which is where Heartbeat was filmed and the station used in Harry Potter! A star studded affair. We decided that we would just head to the end of line & get off at Grosmont whilst it stops there for half an hour because I was just too excited to be back on the train again.

At Grosmont the cute little shop has all sorts of memorabilia, from the war, Yorkshire Tea & even Thomas the Tank Engine. Along with another cute tea rooms and the little ladies room (complete with a roaring fire?!) it is just as quaint as you can imagine. If you head a little deeper in to Grosmont there is also another workshop & a model railway museum for the enthusiasts out there.

I was surprised to find out that the NYMR is actually ran by volunteers so it needs all the help it can get. For £19 the Day Rover allows you to travel up & down the line on a hop on/hop off basis. There is also a limited service that runs all the way to Whitby which I hope we can do very soon. If you are looking for a truly wonderful day out, in a stunning part of Yorkshire then I urge you to travel back in time & enjoy a day out on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Have you ever been on the NYMR? Does it bring back childhood memories for you?

I’ve done this journey many times in the summer, it’s gorgeous at sunset on a summers evening! You should try an afternoon tea at Falling Foss, it’s the most beautiful place.

      Hi Charlotte,
It’s beautiful isn’t it? I’m so glad there is someone else that appreciates this wonderful journey. I will be sure to check ”Falling Foss” out, even just the name sounds super cute?!
      Thanks for stopping by!

i’ve been in this area so many times but never done the actual train (seen it but never been on it), well actually last year we walked from Beck Hole to Grosmont which is quite a trek, hoping to be able to get the train back only to discover we’d missed the last train… that was a total gutter! haha

      Hi Jade,
It’s crazy how we can bypass these things isn’t it? You really must have a ride on the train. It’s so fun & really magical, you can just watch the world go by! I’ll bet that is a trek & a half!

      Hi Sam,
You really must – you don’t need to be a train enthusiast to do it either. A lovely, leisurely day out! Let me know if you try it.
